WCSO Community Work Program-Truckee River Restoration Projects-Weed Control

Project Sponsor: Washoe County Sheriff’s Office
Grant amount: $12,280
Organization Match:
$3,600 (in-kind)
Funding date: November 2008
Grant # 58

This project provides inmate and community service work crews for 30-40 hours per week for 8 weeks in spring 2009 to The Nature Conservancy – Nevada Field Office (TNC) for revegetation and weed control. Because of the importance of controlling weeds on the overall success of these projects, TNC has a produced a plan for managing weeds at these restoration sites. The “Weed and Pest Management Plan for Lower Truckee River, Reno, Nevada” covers the four properties on which restoration efforts are being implemented. The Plan lists and prioritizes the weeds that exist on the properties, and outlines actions to be taken in managing them. These actions include use of herbicide, as well as mechanical control.

TMWA Benefit
This project, as part of a holistic integrated effort to reduce noxious weeds along the Truckee River corridor, improves the Truckee River watershed and long term water quality of the river, thus improving water quality to TMWA treatment plant intakes.
