Urban Storm Water Quality Improvements

Project Sponsors: City of Reno

Grant amount: $66,000
Organization Match: $150,000 Monetary from the City of Reno
Funding Date: June 2006
Grant # 13

This is a demonstration project that entails the installation of tree box filters to allow “first flush” storm water from storm drain catch basins to enter a engineered tree box and infiltrate around the tree. The intent is to have the tree and soil “uptake” pollutants that would otherwise quickly reach the river. After a few years growth, the trees would be transplanted to various parks and new trees would be planted in the tree boxes. This project (if proven) could be expanded and may provide for a reduction in storm water contaminants (hydrocarbons) reaching the river. This is a direct water quality benefit to TMWA and community.

The first tree boxes were completed in late October 2006. The City will test and evaluate water quality (influent vs. effluent) to determine the effectiveness of the project.
