Truckee River Water Quality Protection and Enhancement Project through Connection of the River Oaks Subdivision to the Lawton-Verdi Wastewater Interceptor

Project Sponsor: Washoe County Department of Water Resources
Grant amount: $292,495
Organization match:$589,600
Funding Date: June 2007
Project Status: Complete

Summary: This project involves constructing 100 lineal feet of 8-inch sanitary sewer to connect the sewer collection system serving the River Oaks Subdivision to the Lawton Verdi Interceptor. This project addresses and resolves identified and documented sources of regulated drinking water contaminants and known discharges of pollution to the Truckee River in the Verdi area, which is immediately upstream of the Truckee Meadows Water Authority’s drinking Water supply intake.

Residents of the River Oaks Subdivision will pay the connection fees and construction costs with a monthly surcharge on their wastewater bills over the next 20 years.

This project will relieve an immediate threat to the river from a potential spill and also remove an ongoing source of nitrates affecting the Truckee River. Through Desert Research Institute’s ongoing monitoring program, a substantial reduction in nitrate levels in the river is anticipated. That ongoing reduction will be sustained and documented through continued monitoring.
