This project is a two year assessment and quantification to determine which fraction of organic nitrogen actively promotes algae growth in the Truckee River. Conversely, identification and quantification of relatively benign organic nitrogen (nitrogen that is relatively inert or can be biologically used by native plants) will be undertaken. Results of the project will help in the development, selection and prioritization of future remediation or treatment projects, with the goal of improving water quality and reduction of nitrogen load on the river.
