Invasive Aquatic Species Integrated Management Strategy

Project Sponsor: Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA)
Grant amount:
$118,000
Organization Match:

$28,000 (cash from grant funds through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife
Service), $1,500 (in-kind)
Funding date: November 2008
Grant # 56

This grant provides funding for approximately eight boat inspectors to staff boat ramp facilities to prevent mussel infested boats from entering Lake Tahoe. Funding also will assist TRPA in installing gates at three public boat ramps so that boats cannot enter the lake when inspectors are not available.

TMWA Benefit
These preventative measures are the most crucial aspects of the larger project since the primary vector for these invasive species to enter Lake Tahoe, and subsequently the Truckee River, is via boats and boat trailers. Keeping invasive aquatic species out of Lake Tahoe will help keep the gates clear and water running freely to the Truckee River. Also, by keeping mussels from entering the Truckee River, future clogging of TMWA intakes at its treatment and hydroelectric river diversions can be avoided.
