Independence Lake Forest and Wildfire Management

Project Sponsor: The Nature Conservancy
Grant amount: $50,000
Organization Match:
$91,492 (cash)
Funding date: July 2010
Grant #74

This project is a continuation of the woody fuels reduction program of the watershed contiguous to Independence Lake. This funding will support the 2010 program for thinning and removal of woody fuels for approximately 80 acres of watershed land. TMWA has supported these efforts in the past, including the development of a forest management plan and initial implementation of the plan.

TMWA Benefit:
Forest Management is critical to controlling wildfires, which can have devastating impacts on watersheds and water quality. This work will reduce wildfire and erosion potential and will help to preserve the almost pristine nature of Independence Lake, a major drought storage reservoir for TMWA.
